How much could I save?
Stay with your lender, or move? What actually decides it.
When a deal ends you have two routes. A product transfer keeps you with your existing lender on a new rate, and depending on the lender and what you are asking for it can be the simpler of the two, sometimes without a fresh affordability assessment. A remortgage moves you to a different lender, which opens up the rest of the market but normally means underwriting and legal work.
The rate on its own rarely settles it. A product fee, a valuation and legal costs all sit alongside the rate, and the lowest headline figure is not always the lowest total cost over the period you care about. If you are still inside a deal, an early repayment charge can outweigh whatever switching would save. And if you want to borrow more at the same time, that often changes which route is appropriate rather than simply adding to the amount.
Neither option is better in the abstract. We compare both on total cost for your circumstances — and if you want the full detail first, we have set it out in our guide on product transfer or remortgage.
